Turning on your Google Assistant and saying ‘Lumos’ will turn on your flashlight. This is a pretty popular spell in the Harry Potter books which has been used by almost all prominent characters at some point of time. Be it for reading a book in the dark, or while running away in the dark woods, Lumos has been a spell which has helped Harry, Ron and Hermione a number of times, and you too can cast it from your phones now. Interestingly, similar to the books where the characters say ‘Nox’ to turn the light off, you can say ‘Nox’ to your Google Assistant to turn the flashlight off. This is truly a cool Easter Egg in the Google Assistant – a tribute to the Harry Potter books and movies.

The word Lumos has roots in the Latin word ‘Lumen’ which means light. Similarly, the word ‘Nox’ means night or darkness. Both these spells have been used in the Harry Potter books and movies numerous times. While you can always select flashlight from the phone or from the quick access menu, this is a cool Easter Egg. As of now you cannot use your phone to cast any other charms or spells, but keep practicing your spells daily – who knows what your phones might be able to do soon. For the record, it’s pronounced Wingardium Levi-o-sa!
