Design & Build
The Samsung Galaxy J2 comes with a plastic body. It comes with curved corners that make it more comfortable to hold. The back of the device is different from other devices that we have seen from Samsung. The device comes with a slight hump with stripes on the back. There is a Smart Glow LED ring around the camera which serves as a notification light.
The Samsung Galaxy J3 too comes with a plastic body. It has faux leather back with rounded sides that are made of polycarbonate and have a solid feel. It has plastic rims with a chrome finish to give it a metallic look. Both the devices come with a physical home button on the front along with the two navigation keys on the either side of the button. Both the devices lack a fingerprint scanner.
Display
The Samsung Galaxy J2 features a 5 inch Super AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 720p. It comes with a pixel density of ~294 ppi and color depth of 16M colors.
The Galaxy J3 also features a 5 inch Super AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 720p. It comes with a pixel density of ~294 ppi and color depth of 16M colors. The J3 comes with Asahi Dragontrail Glass protection. There is no major difference among both the devices in terms of display.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy J2 sports an 8 MP primary camera with autofocus, LED flash and f/2.2 aperture. It can record videos up to [email protected] On the front, the device features a 5 MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture.
The Samsung Galaxy J3 also features an 8 MP primary camera with autofocus, LED flash and f/2.2 aperture. The J2 is powered by a Quad-core 1.5 GHz Spreadtrum SC8830 processor with Mali-400MP2 GPU. The J3 on the other hand is powered by a Quad-core 1.5 GHz Speardtrum SC7731 processor with Mali-400MP2 GPU. Both the devices come with 1.5 GB of RAM. At a time when most budget smartphones come with a minimum 16 GB of internal storage, Samsung has launched both J2 and J3 with just 8 GB of internal storage. The storage can be further expanded up to 128 GB via microSD card. Both the devices come with a dedicated microSD card slot.
Battery
Again, both the devices come with a similar removable Li-Ion 2600 mAh battery. Considering that the processor and the display of the devices are the same, the battery life of both the devices will be similar.
Pricing & Availability
The Samsung Galaxy J2 has been priced at Rs. 9,750 and can be purchased online. The Samsung Galaxy J3 has been priced at Rs. 8,990 and can be purchased from Snapdeal. Snapdeal is currently offering the device at a discounted price. You may be slightly surprised that the J3 costs less than the J2, but this is because the J3 was launched nearly 4 months ago.
Conclusion
The Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J2 are Samsung’s two new devices aimed at competing with the offerings from its Chinese competitors. With the competition getting extremely tough in the sub-10k price range, Samsung needs phones with the right specs and at the right price. Unfortunately, they don’t really seem to hold up to any of the phones in their price ranges. Even comparing the Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J2, you get only two differences – the J3 was launched with Lollipop (and will probably be stuck on Lollipop forever) while the J2 comes with Marshmallow. However, the J3 comes with a Spreadtrum SC7731 processor while the J2 comes with a Spreadtrum SC8830 processor. Both the processors are clocked similarly so you shouldn’t notice a lot of difference. Compare this with the competing devices in this range which come with either a Mediatek or a Snapdragon processor, both of which are far more superior and better supported than Spreadtrum. Samsung’s strategy seems half-hearted at best, here.
