Before the launch, we have spent a few days with the new selfie-centric device from Xiaomi and here are our initial impressions about the Xiaomi Redmi Y2.

Design and display

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with a sleek design and sort of looks like the Redmi Note 5 Pro that was launched recently in India. The outer casing of the smartphone is made out of plastic material, and it has a brushed metallic finish all over to give it a metallic feel. The smartphone sure feels plastic in hand, but it makes the smartphone lightweight.

As we mentioned before, the smartphone looks precisely like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro with dual camera setup at the back placed in a vertical orientation. The display of the smartphone has rounded corners, and the bezels are the almost similar size to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The smartphone comes with a micro USB port, IR sensor, and dedicated microSD card slot and fingerprint sensor at the back.

The Redmi Y2 comes with a 5.99 inches HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and rounded corners. The screen is quite bright but under direct sunlight, the content seems to be washed out.

Camera

The Redmi Y2 comes with a 16MP AI-powered Selfie camera which takes excellent pictures even in low light condition. The selfie camera even comes with a selfie flash which helps to make images better. To make the pictures better and add detail, Xiaomi has used Super Pixel process which combines four pixels into one. The AI Beautify 4.0 is Xiaomi’s selfie feature which detects a face in the viewfinder and beautifies it automatically.

The rear camera in Redmi Y2 is a dual camera setup including a 12MP and a 5MP sensor. It comes with a portrait mode which adds a depth effect to the images and blurs out the background leaving you with a magical portrait image. The smartphone can record FHD videos at 30 fps and can capture slo-mo videos too at 480 fps.

Hardware, Performance

The Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC under the hood running at a clock speed of 2.0 GHz. The processor provides high performance with battery efficiency so you will get more out of your smartphone every time you are playing games or just taking a selfie and sharing it on your social media account. The processor is paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage (4GB RAM and 64GB ROM variant is also available) which is expandable up to 128GB via a dedicated microSD card slot. Overall, the smartphone performed well in our testing and the games ran smoothly without any frame drop or lag. The smartphone got a score of 77339 on AnTuTu benchmark.

The Battery performed really well, but there is no fast charging available on the smartphone, so you have to compromise with long charging time because the battery is 3,080mAh in size.
